The Role of Suffering in our Evolution
Does a soul choose the role of a murderer?
An excellent (and tough!) question that came to me from Jim Donaldson in Cincinnati, OH. No way could I answer this one on my own so I turned to my friends on the other side for help. What follows is their insight.
"Yes, believe it or not, each of you
willingly chooses the role that you play. You do not create your life haphazardly and you do not do so
without serving the greater good in some way. What you need to understand for
this to make sense is that your time here on earth is very temporary. You each
come here to gain valuable lessons and explore parts of the human spectrum. As
difficult as it is to grasp—in the greater reality none of it is truly real.
The knowledge gained, the awareness received, the insights you have—yes. That
is the purpose. That, you keep with you. The experiences themselves through
which such knowledge is gained are just vehicles for these learning
opportunities. Can a person truly be murdered? You are each eternal beings,
having a very brief and temporary experience here in the earth plane. You have
each lived many lives—experiencing death in many ways—violent, non-violent,
through sickness, accident or injury, and so on. All are merely vehicles for
growth. So yes—a person who is a murderer or a person who willingly tortures
others has agreed at he soul level to play this role. You say you want a
perfect, utopian world, without violence or suffering of any kind. There are
planes where such an existence is possible. You, however, chose this plane, at
least for this particular incarnation, because of the valuable learning
opportunities it provides. Without the violence and suffering what would be the
point of coming here if your soul intended to learn about such things that only
violence and suffering can afford? The Holocaust propelled humanity into a new
direction of tolerance. As did the civil rights movement. Look at all of the
beautiful work that Mahatma Gandhi did, that Martin Luther King, Jr. did. They
showed humanity how to stare the most horrific and adverse conditions in the
face and respond with love instead of with more violence. Such a beautiful and
uplifting example and expression of the human spirit would not be possible
without the conflicts that spurred it. This polarity is necessary to gain
certain growth and learning opportunities that would not be available in a
utopian world. To explore certain parts of the emotional spectrum you must go
to a plane where such a spectrum exists. Yes, there are planes where violence
does not exist. You however did not choose such planes for your current
incarnation. You chose the earth plane. Because it is ripe with learning and
growth opportunities that are not available elsewhere. We understand these are
hard truths to understand. With only limited awareness (that is, without the
conscious recollection of the bigger picture, your soul’s agenda, and the fact
that life is eternal), it does in fact seem absurd to live in a world where
such suffering and violence exists. Please understand that it is not for
nothing. It is not pointless. In the grand scheme of things, the violence, the
suffering, the strife, the injustices of the world, are merely vehicles for
something greater—for greater learning, for opportunities to explore the human
spirit and potential in varied and beautiful ways. By witnessing violence—even
indirectly such as watching a news story—you each have the opportunity to
choose love instead of hate in your response. Every time you choose a loving
response, you expand in your spiritual awareness. And with each expansion, you
help to expand the whole. Just as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi
chose love instead of hate in the face of violence and adversity. Do you see
how violence provides opportunities for love? For good? For growth? This is the
nature of the earth plane. To learn through such polarity. It isn’t easy and it
isn’t pretty. There is no doubt about that. It is a brave and committed
decision to incarnate into the earth plane. If likened to a school, this would
be one of the most truly difficult! But the soul is aware of its immortality,
its desire to grow and expand its awareness. And where better to do so than in
one of the most challenging curriculums available? "
