How Terrorists Teach Love

A brilliant question out of Asheville, NC: I understand that the energy we put into the world contributes either to peace or strife. I’m working on expressing only love and releasing judgment. But how do I express love/withhold judgment towards terrorists, murderers, and rapists?

First of all, don’t be hard on yourself! You are learning to love, healing those parts of you that withhold love, and this is part of the human process. But understand that it is a process. So it’s okay to falter and fluctuate. And understand that you don't necessarily have to feel love towards these ones, but you can stop feeling hate. You can transform judgment into understanding.

That said, let us introduce a new way to look at those in your world considered awful or malicious. They are a divine spark, just as you are, just as Jesus was, just as Mother Theresa was. Everybody has the same divine thread running through them. With this knowledge it is easier to understand the next component of this—that everything is ultimately serving the greater good. Just look at yourself as an example. By looking to murderers and terrorists and trying to express understanding versus hate, you are growing and expanding more into love on your own individual path. This is good. The actions of these individuals are providing you with an opportunity to grow into love. Now look at a larger picture, on a global level—if this polarity did not exist (what you term ‘good’ and ‘bad’) it would be difficult to expand into unconditional love. You need to witness the opposite of love to even consciously choose love. Do you see? Without strife, the situations that allow you to make a choice in how to respond would not provide this valuable opportunity—you wouldn’t even have a choice. There would not be much room to grow. How can one know light if there is no dark?

You can think of life on earth like a big play. Everybody has chosen their roles and they are acting those out. The one who is the “victim” may very well choose to be the “perpetrator” in his or her next lifetime. There are so many various facets of the human experience to learn from—including violence and suffering—that it is no mistake that all such facets are explored. It is the way the soul learns and grows. In the grand scheme of things there are no victims or perpetrators. All beings are divine. Some have chosen to embrace a life that dishonors and violates others. These individuals are often damaged at the levels of the psyche, emotional intelligence, and energetically. These are ones you would term “lost souls”, ones who are terribly misguided. This plane that you live in is of a vibrational frequency that allows for such experiences. It is one of the most difficult lessons there is on the earth plane, to cease judgment and hatred towards those who maliciously harm others. But remember, all are children of God.

It is also useful to know that at the soul level nobody enters into a situation of victimization against their will. For those who are victims of violence, the soul has agreed to participate in that scenario because it somehow serves their path. It may be to learn valuable lessons of their own, it may be to provide learning/growth opportunities for others, or it may be karmic in nature. You never know what the soul is after, but you can know that it is a highly intelligent being and always chooses wisely. While this seems ludicrous to the conscious human mind, the soul—that part of you that is eternally learning, sharing, and growing—understands that there is no death and therefore these human experiences, no matter how horrific, are simply vehicles for learning and cannot truly threaten its existence. That said, try to view the path of all individuals compassionately with the understanding that there is more than meets the eye in any situation. Trust the intelligence of the universe. This involves a process of surrendering to the knowledge that all is unfolding exactly as it is supposed to; that the intricate workings of the universe are designed to serve the greatest good of all.
